Can I Stop My Dog From Chewing Up His Dog Bed?

The problem of dogs chewing can become an expensive one when they have a tendency to chew on their dog bed. Most dog beds aren’t built to take the strain of frustrated teeth and claws and before long, the covers are in shreds and the padding is all over the floor. It can be disheartening to buy a new one knowing that it will probably happen again. So, how can you stop your dog from chewing his dog bed?Dog Sitting on a Bed

Figure out why they are chewing

The desire to chew can be strong for many reasons. Therefore, the first thing to do is to try and reduce this need to chew in adult dogs by removing these negative influences. One of the biggest causes of chewing in adult dogs is boredom. Some smart animals with a lot of energy to burn need something to preoccupy their time when left alone. Chewing becomes the most accessible game and a way to vent frustration. The same is true when dealing with separation anxiety. Some dogs can’t deal with being alone for long periods and this is a coping mechanism. Also, remember that puppies will chew when teething as a way to soothe the discomfort.

The next thing to do is to find them other items to chew that are engaging

If they have to chew things why they are alone in the house and looking for entertainment, or relief from teething, it is better to have an appropriate toy, bone or hide available, rather than a shoe or other prized possession. Chew toys offer an item of comfort and security that can entertain them for a long time, and dental options help to keep teeth clean at the same time. Also, there are Kong toys and similar devices where food can be hidden for additional mental stimulation. At the same time, you can train them against chewing inappropriate items with deterrent sprays and positive reinforcement.

The final thing to do with bad chewers is to look into indestructible dog beds

While good training and the right toys can make a big difference to excessive chewers, especially when leaving them alone for long periods, it is not always enough. Those that spend far too much time and money replacing dog beds should consider going for a model that is a little more durable. There are dog beds out there with tough materials and strong frames made of vinyl, Cordura, PVC and aluminium. There won’t be many dogs getting through these beds and this makes them a sound investment with a lot of longevity. Also, there is no compromise on comfort and security, so they still get a great night’s sleep.

Chewing can be controlled with the right measures

Remember that you cannot stop them from chewing if it comforts them, especially puppies. Instead, find a more appropriate outlet where they are chewing up cheap, replaceable items, not expensive dog beds. Understand their needs, give them an indestructible dog bed to sleep on and draw their attention to more appropriate chew toys.
