Dog Strollers and the Importance of Physical Activity for Dogs

There is a concern with the use of pet strollers for dogs that it encourages pet owners to inflict an unhealthy, sedentary lifestyle on their animals. Many dog owners that invest in a stroller do so to aid their pet when it becomes too old to travel long distances on walks, or suffers injuries that limit mobility. While these reasons are justifiable, and ensure that animals get the enrichment and outdoor time they need, owners cannot forget that all dogs need the right level of exercise too.

Exercise is vital for all dogs, regardless of age and ability

We cannot stop dogs from exercising and keeping fit just because they are older or one leg doesn’t work so well. It is important that dogs get the chance to have their daily walk around a park and some play time. Not only does it get them out of the house into the fresh air and sunshine, it provides the ideal opportunity to work off the calories of their diet and maintain a trim, lean figure. It is far too easy for some dog breeds to put on weight and over-eat. Some breeds, such as corgis, don’t seem to have that off switch that tells them when they are full. A day full of activities with walks, games of fetch and other energetic pursuits helps to keep this under control. At the same time, they help to keep the brain active, reinforce the bond between dog and owners and make the animals a lot happier.

The additional issues with weight gain and poor physical fitness are the knock-on effects with health and well-being. Those that eat too much and exercise too little can become obese and unfit, placing strain on organs, cardiovascular systems and joints. This is why it is important that dog owner provide at least the bare minimum for their dogs each dog, regardless of their age and mobility issues. Where possible, they need that time to work off the calories in a controlled, beneficial manner and protect their health. This can help to prolong the life and happiness of these elderly dogs.

Dog strollers can be a help rather than a hindrance – in the right hands

The problem for some owners comes in getting their dog to the park, beach or other play area to give them this exercise. It they can’t walk there, they can’t use it. This is where the dog stroller is so beneficial. These pet strollers are a means of transportation between the home and park, saving the legs and hearts of disabled dogs. It means that all their energy and effort can go into their tailor made exercise plan and play time in the park. When they have tired themselves out in the park, they can go back in the stroller and have a nap on the journey home. There is the risk that some dog owners will allow their animals to become obese without the right exercise package. It all comes down to knowing when to use the stroller and when to let animals use their legs.
