There are many cat owners that will watch videos of perfectly house-trained cats, sigh and say “I wish mine was like that”. Among the typical cat videos of cats performing all sorts of weird and wonderful tricks, there are also those of pets that learned to hop up onto the toilet seat, balance themselves, relieve themselves into the toilet bowl and push the lever on the flush.
It is impressive stuff, although perhaps a little unhygienic if you don’t know where their paws have been. Still, many would happy disinfect the toilet seat more regularly and train their cat if it meant never having to scoop out a litter tray and deal with all that mess ever again. The good news here is that there is a solution that isn’t quite so extreme. There are flushing cat litter boxes that are basically miniature cat toilets. The question is, is this all a step to far from the everyday litter tray? Are they really worthwhile?
There are some clear advantages here to the flushing, self cleaning cat litter box.
These flushing cat toilets are appealing because they offer that solution that owners are after – a clean, hands-free approach to cat waste – without the potential issues of sharing a toilet with your pets. They really do eliminate that problem of waste collection and disposal and the potential issues of odor. The cat goes when it needs to, the automatic system flushes water through the bowl and the waste disappears into the plumbing. It is also often more appealing for the cat as this is a cat-sized, cat-focused design that they can use with greater piece of mind. Some are wide enough to accommodate more than one animal and some come with privacy hoods – adapting them into flushing cat litter boxes more than toilets. This is very much their toilet and their space, and you don’t need to have all that much to do with it.
This is all great in theory for those that want nothing to do with cleaning out waste, but isn’t it all a little extreme?
It is true that any cat owner with one of these flushing toilets really does need to own the fact and be proud of their high-end solution. Anyone that may even be slightly embarrassed by the prospect will struggle here because you aren’t hiding this away in a corner like a disguised cat litter box. Owners need to proudly state that their cats deserve nothing but the best toilet facilities. There is also no other way to act about it after you have spend all that time plumbing in the cat toilet in the perfect location.
Some people will marvel at the mechanics and cleanliness of the flushing cat litter box. Others will laugh at the ridiculous nature and wonder why the animal can’t go in a litter box like every other cat. The final choice is not down to the accusing family members, or even the cat. If you are determined to enjoy a hands-free approach to cat waste and the full convenience of these flushable cat toilets, a tray or a self-cleaning box just isn’t going to do.
